School zone (with maximum speed)
What it means
A school sign with a maximum speed posted under it marks a school zone. On school days from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (unless a municipality posts other hours) you must not exceed the posted speed, 30 km/h unless otherwise posted, and you must not pass another vehicle.
White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

What to do when you see it
- 1.On school days, keep to the posted speed, 30 km/h unless otherwise posted, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- 2.If a municipality sets other hours, they are posted beneath the school sign; follow those.
- 3.While the zone is in effect, do not pass or try to pass a vehicle travelling in the same direction.
On the knowledge test
Three facts are tested: school days only, 30 km/h unless posted otherwise, and no passing. A zone has the speed tab; the same sign without it is a school area.
