School bus stop ahead
What it means
School buses stop ahead to pick up or drop off students. Watch for a stopped bus with its lights flashing, and for children near the road.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.

How to recognise it

Where you will see it
Roads and highways where a school bus picks up or drops off students at a stop that drivers cannot see in time.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Slow down and watch for a bus that is stopping and for children walking to or from it.
- 2.Alternating amber lights on the bus mean be ready to stop; alternating red lights with the stop sign out from its left side mean stop.
- 3.On an undivided highway, traffic from both directions stops; on a highway divided by a median, only vehicles behind the bus must stop. Stay stopped until the red lights are off and the stop sign is pulled in.

The sign only warns; the rules come from the bus’s own lights. Expect questions on amber versus red lights, and on who must stop on a divided versus an undivided highway.
