Two-way left turn lane
What it means
The centre lane is shared by left-turning vehicles from both directions. Use it only to turn left, never for through travel or passing.
White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

How to recognise it
A black square with two white arrows curving in opposite directions, one from each end.
Where you will see it
The middle of roads where drivers in both directions often turn left into businesses and side streets.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Use the centre lane only to turn left; it is shared by left-turning traffic from both directions.
- 2.Enter it close to where you will turn, and watch for a vehicle coming the other way in the same lane.
- 3.Never use it to travel along the road or to pass.
On the knowledge test
The words to recognise are 'shared and reserved for left turning traffic travelling in either direction'. Passing or driving in it is the wrong answer.
