Stop sign ahead
What it means
A stop sign is ahead but may not be visible yet. Slow down and be ready to stop.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.

How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a small red octagon, the shape of the stop sign, and a black arrow pointing ahead.
Where you will see it
Before a stop sign that drivers cannot see from far enough back to stop comfortably, such as one beyond a bend or a hill crest.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Ease off the accelerator and start slowing early: the stop sign may still be hidden by a curve, a hill or trees.
- 2.At the stop sign itself, stop completely before the stop line, then give pedestrians and traffic the right-of-way before moving on.
On the knowledge test
The guide lists it with “yield ahead” and “traffic control signals ahead” as signs that warn of a traffic regulation. It is not a stop sign: you do not stop at the diamond, you prepare to stop at the red sign that follows.
