Explanation: A provincial highway is identified by a route marker carrying a single-digit, two-digit or three-digit number. A local road usually has no route marker; it is known by a name, or by a township or range road number.

Explanation: The maple-leaf shield marks the Trans-Canada Highway. Route markers like it identify a road by its number, name or other designation, which helps you follow a route on a map.
