Pedestrian signal – don’t walk
What it means
The DON’T WALK words or upraised hand tell pedestrians not to enter the crosswalk; anyone already crossing may finish. For a driver it warns that the parallel green light is about to change, so be ready to stop.

How to recognise it
An orange upraised hand lit on a dark signal face. Some signals show the words DON’T WALK or WAIT, and some add a countdown timer.
Where you will see it
The same signal heads as the WALK symbol, at signalized intersections and crossings.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Be ready to stop: the green light for your direction is about to change.
- 2.Pedestrians who started crossing before it appeared may still be finishing; let them clear the crosswalk before you turn.
On the knowledge test
Pedestrians facing it must not enter the crosswalk, but anyone already crossing may continue. Where there are no pedestrian signals, pedestrians obey the colour of the traffic light they face.
